Irish Setter Club of Victoria Championship Shows

The Irish Setter Club of Victoria enjoys the largest membership and it is acknowledged that its Championship Show is the most prestigious as it is host to the largest assembly of irish setters in Australia.

Serious breeders and exhibitors have it earmarked as their ‘go to’ show on their calendar as it boasts competition from many of the States around the Country.

This annual fixture is respected and utilised as the vehicle for showcasing of new baby puppies as well as the current top show dogs. It is also ideal for the opportunity of viewing specimens for prospective stud purposes.

It is generally considered the Victorian championship show is the equivalent of the American or Canadian ‘National’ championship show.

The Irish Setter Club of Victoria – as does The Irish Setter Association of NSW – endeavours to appoint breed specialty judges, usually from overseas to adjudicate.

Below are full results from the last two years – also critiques from last year & some previous years.  In addition, the list of all the winners of the Irish Setter Club of Victoria’s Championship shows follows.

IRISH SETTER CLUB OF VICTORIA’S 48th CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

MRS LINDA MILLMAN CRITIQUE

First, let me thank you for allowing me to judge your Specialty. I found the quality of the exhibits to be very high. It was so much fun judging so many lovely dogs. A special thanks to my ring steward and photographer. Finally, thank you for the gift of lovely photo book of Australia, it has a prominent place on my coffee table.

Baby Puppy Dog Class

1st  Eireannmada Paradise Lost (AI)

This puppy excelled in breed type, style and outline. He had a lovely balanced head, nice neck into shoulders, and firm top line. His well laid back shoulder balanced his well let down stifle. He moved very well and had excellent reach and drive. I was very impressed with this young fellow. I would love to see him in a few years as I believe he will be a show stopper. I really loved this puppy.

2nd Eireannmada Richard Thomas

This boy was also a lovely puppy. His head was clean with nice planes. He had a nice outline, good top line and nice bend of stifle. His shoulder placement was not as well laid back as the first place puppy. He moved well and had nice style. I think this puppy will be a lovely adult.

3rd  Gwyndara New Sensation

This puppy was balanced in outline and was also of good type. He was nicely proportioned and was fairly sound. His head planes were not as level nor as balanced as the first and second place puppies but his head was pleasing.

Minor Puppy Dog Class

1st  Eirean Pure Vagabond (AI)

This puppy had nice balance and moved fairly well. His head was pleasing and had good ear placement. His upper arm was a bit short placing his front assembly more forward which shortened his reach.

Puppy Dog Class

1st  Eirean Pure Genius (AI)

This puppy dog had a nicely balanced head and good ear placement. He had a fairly good front with good pro sternum. He was a bit high in croup and could use a stronger thigh and more bend of stifle. He moved soundly.

Junior Dog Class

1st  Brodruggan Outback Jack

This young males head was balanced with fairly good head planes. His shoulder was upright but he has a fairly good let down of stifle. I found he was long in body with a rounded in croup

Intermediate Dog Class

1st Solasdas Copper Field

I found this dog to have a good pro sternum, lovely mahogany coat that was in excellent condition. His head was fairly balanced with good ear placement but could use a little more muzzle. His rear angulation was moderate and good tail placement. I found him upright in shoulder and long in body.

Australian Bred Dog Class

1st Eirean Frozen Dream (AI)

This dog was overall nicely balanced. He had a very pleasing head with good plains and nice ear placement. His shoulder was fairly well laid back and had Moderate bend of stifle. He moved well and held a firm top

2nd Ch Brodruggan Rogue Trader

This dog had a lovely head, balanced with very nice planes and correct ear placement. He had a good strong top line. His well let down stifle and good thigh showed in his movement. His shoulder placement was upright and front a bit forward which restricted his reach a bit. I also found him a little long in body but he was overall a very pretty dog.

Open Dog Class    ~   This was a lovely class of dogs

1st  Aust Grand Ch Shelomith Vice Regent

My first place dog has a lovely overall outline. His head was balanced and masculine. Good neck into shoulder and a strong top line. His shoulder laid back and front assembly well under himself. He had correct tail placement, strong thigh and nice let down of stifle which balanced his correct front. When he moved he did so with ease of motion with good reach and drive. He has lovely overall breed type.

2nd Ch Cairncross Concierge With Tullane (Imp USA)

My second place dog was also a lovely male. His head was lean and balanced with no depth of skull and correct ear placement and was a little more refined than the first place dog. His neck into shoulder was not as smooth as the first place dog as he was a bit upright in shoulder. He has a firm top line and correct tail placement and carriage. He has a strong rear with good let down of stifle. On the move he covered ground well but did not have the reach of the first place dog. This dog is stylish and a wonderful example of the breed.

3rd Ch Brodruggan Temptation

My third place dog also had a nice overall outline. His head was balanced with nice back skull and good ear placement. His shoulder and upper arm were well laid back. He was shorter in back but top line was firm with good tail set. He also a very nice dog overall.

Veteran Dog (7 years and under the age 10 years)

1st Ch Glengary Wyndchimer

This veteran dog was in very good condition for his age. His head was balanced and masculine. He has an overall balanced outline. His front was well under himself and he has a strong thigh and nice let down of stifle.

Challenge Dog – from the open class

Aust Grand Ch. Shelomith Vice Regent

Reserve Challenge Dog – From the open class

Ch. Cairncross Concierge With Tullane (Imp USA)

Both of these dogs were very worthy of a Challenge Certificate

.

Baby Puppy Bitch Class

1st Gwyndara Joint Venture

This puppy has a lovely outline, nice shoulder placement, very pretty head and nice let down of stifle, nice topline and moves well She is a lovely puppy.

2nd Gwyndara Beautiful Girl

This puppy was also a very nice puppy. She too had a lovely head, nice let down of stifle and moved fairly well. She was not as good in front as the first place puppy

.

Minor Puppy Bitch Class

1st Eirean Pure Elegance (AI)

This bitch has a very pretty feminine head, nice neck into shoulder, well balanced with a good outline. Here rear is sound and has nice let down of stifle. Overall I liked the balance of this young bitch.

2nd Brodruggan Maple Doll

This puppy was a nice bitch as well. She had a nice outline, pretty head and moved well. Her topline was not as firm as the 1st bitch but was a good representative of the breed

.

Junior Bitch Class

1st Eireannmada Queen Of Rock

This bitch had a lovely outline and was very feminine. Her head was clean and balanced with nice planes. She had a nice neck into shoulder. Her shoulder placement was good and top line firm. She had a nice thigh and good let down of stifle. She moved soundly.

2nd Brodruggan Red Desert

This bitch also had a lovely head, well balanced with good planes. She was overall balanced but did not have as good a shoulder as the first place bitch. She moved soundly and had a firm top

3rd Brodruggan Red Scenter

This bitch was fairly well balanced and was feminine. Her head was not as balanced as the first two bitches. Her foreface was longer than her back skull. She had  nice outline, nice neck into shoulder and good top line.

.

Intermediate Bitch Class

1st  Eireannmada Alouetta

The first place bitch has a very pretty head, nicely balanced with good planes. She has a nice outline, strong top line and is balanced and very moderate. Her front is well under her and balanced with a strong rear. She moved soundly and had good reach and drive.

2nd Nauvoo At Sienna

This bitch was very stylish and feminine. Her head was pleasing however it was longer in foreface and not as balanced as the first place bitch. She had a fairly good shoulder nice rear assembly, good thigh and let down of stifle. She moved well.

3rd Pendoric Playn Wiv Thyme

This bitch has a very pretty feminine head, nice planes and good ear placement. Her upper arm is a bit short giving her the impression of having a short neck. S he has a lovely setter type.  Her stifle is well let down and she has a good thigh. I found her to be long in body which gives her the appearance of being short on leg.

.

Australian Bred Bitch Class

What a lovely class of bitches to assess. They were all worthy

1st  Aust. Ch. Eireannmada Callothewind (AI)

This bitch has a lovely outline, nice layback of shoulder, lovely breed type feminine and moderate.  She has a very feminine head with nice planes. She has good reach and drive and covered ground with ease.

2nd Ch Rhiannon Irish Treasure

This too was a lovely bitch. She has a lovely feminine head and is very elegant. I found her short in upper arm which placed her front assembly more forward. She has a nice outline, nice thigh and let down of stifle. I found she was a bit cow hocked. Overall she was substantial but very feminine and of very good breed type.

3rd Ch Pendoric Red Angel

This bitch was also lovely. She has a very nice head; feminine lean and balanced has a bit of a sliding stop. I found her neck into shoulder not as smooth as the other two bitches because of her shoulder placement. She is nicely balanced and has a lovely top line and rear assembly. Her croup was a bit high.

.

Open Bitch Class

There were some outstanding bitches in this class

1st Ch Rhiannon Resplendence

This bitch in my opinion is just stunning. She is elegant and feminine with lovely breed type. She has an outstanding head, feminine, lean and clean with no depth nice stop and perfectly balanced plains. Her neck into shoulder was clean. She has a good lay back of shoulder and front assembly well under her. Her top line is firm. Her thigh was strong well muscled and she has a nice let down of stifle. She is so balanced. She moved so effortlessly and has great reach and drive. I could not take my eyes off her she gave me goose bumps.

2nd Ch Cairncross Flirting With Tullane (Imp.USA)

This bitch was also very lovely. She has wonderful breed type. She is feminine and has a nice outline. Her head was nice, lean and clean and balanced. I found her back skull was not parallel as the first place bitch as it fell off a bit in back skull. She is very elegant. Her outline was lovely. She is a little forward in front however has a lovely rear assembly, with nice let down of stifle, good thigh and very sound. Her top line was firm and she has a good croup. She moved very well.

3rd  Ch Dunloe Original Sin

This bitch was nicely balanced and feminine. She has a nice head with good planes and nice ear placement. She has a nice front, good let down of stifle and firm top line. Her croup was not as smooth as the other two bitches. She moved well and has nice side gait.

.

Veteran Bitch ( years and under 10)

1st  Ch Pendoric Fire Anythyme

This is a lovely feminine bitch in excellent condition. She has a lovely feminine head, very balanced, lean clean and lovely planes. Her neck into shoulder was smooth. She has a fairly nice shoulder and very good let down of stifle. Her overall outline was balanced. She moved well and had good reach and drive. She has very nice breed type.

.

Veteran Bitch (years and over)

1st Ch Rhiannon Devorgilla

At age 10 this bitch still had style, elegance, and outline and is in great condition for her age. She has a beautiful head, wonderful plains, and soft expression. She has a nice neck into shoulder which was well laid back. Her rear was well let down with good thigh. Her age showed in her top line a bit but over all she was an outstanding old lady. She moved very well and had lovely reach and drive. She reminded me of my Challenge bitch winner and I was later to learn they have the same dam. She also has lovely breed type.

.

Challenge Bitch  – from the Open Class

BEST IN SHOW

Ch Rhiannon Resplendence

My best in Specialty was such a wonderful representative of the breed. She was balanced in every aspect. Her head is beautiful, lean, clean, and has that brick on brick outline that is so valued. She has a lovely neck into shoulder, nice firm topline, good croup and correct tail set. Her well laid back shoulder and upper arm placement gave her wonderful front reach. She has a nice brisket and sternum. Her thigh was firm and stifle well let down. She has style and elegance and is so typey. She moved with such ease with good reach and drive and covered ground with effortless ease. She moved me.

.

RUNNER UP IN SHOW

Ch Rhiannon Devorgilla

This old girl just stole my heart, she was still elegant and beautiful at her age.

.

BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX

Aust Grand Ch Shelomith Vice Regent

I would like to make an honourable mention to the Challenge Dog; he was a wonderful and outstanding representative of the breed and very worthy.

IRISH SETTER CLUB OF VICTORIA’S 47th CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

MRS DEBBIE DAVIS CRITIQUE

I would like to thank the club for inviting me to judge your Specialty. I have always admired the Australian Irish Setters and was so excited when I got the invitation to come to Australia to do your Specialty, which enabled me to see them in person.

I loved my line-up of dogs and bitches and thank the membership for supporting the show. I wish everyone the best of luck with your baby puppies that I got to judge since they are your future stars. I look forward to seeing how my Challenge Dog and Challenge Bitch do in the future. I feel they both will have a great show career coming their way.

Again, thank you for your hospitality and friendship.

Debbie Davis

Baby Puppy Dog

What a pleasure to judge puppies under 6 months old, they were lovely.

1   Cueunaich Sherlock Holmes (Delmenico)
Balanced puppy with good front and rear assembly, moves with a strong top line with good reach and drive. Would like a little more stop which may come with age.
2   Eireannmada Rockstar (Browne)
Very similar in type of the 1st puppy, a little shorter in rib cage than the 1st, balanced moving. Prefer the tail set and tail carriage of 1st.
3   Pendoric Smoke N Fire (Hearn)
Has begun to go up on leg and not at the same stage of development as the 1st & 2nd. Has a nice front and rear assembly.

Minor Puppy Dog
Withdrawn – Pendoric Foggy Perfection (Lindberg)

Puppy Dog
1   Eireannmada Kingford Smith (Browne)
A single entry in this class. A tall, dark young man with a nice head. I would like to see more angle front and rear, but this may change with time.

Junior Dog
1   Cairncross Concierge With Tullane (Paine)
A single entry in this class. A nice dog with a good front assembly with a wonderful head with a correct eye. Would like a little more drive in the rear when moving.

Intermediate Dog
1   Ch Pendoric Red N Ragin (Fry)
A well-balanced dog with good front and rear assembly and forechest. Head planes are very nice with good depth of muzzle. Moves very well with a good reach and drive. The tail carriage distracted from otherwise a pleasing picture.

2   Ch Brodruggan Perfect Encor (Bird)
Nice dark dog with front and rear angulation a little less than the 1st place dog. Could use a little more length in ribcage. Carries a nice topline and moved efficiently.
3   Tahtan Cutting Edge (Hunt/Finlaison)
Lovely head with a good neck to shoulder. I preferred the proportion within the body of the 1st & 2nd dogs.

Australian Bred Dog
1   Brodruggan Rogue Trader (Stewart)
Nicely balanced dog with good forechest, nice neck to shoulder and topline. Would like to see a more almond shaped eye, which is critical in the expression of the irish setter. Movement was good, would like a little more muscling in rear.
2   Ch Eireannmada Riverdance (Fall/Browne)
Nicely balanced dog. Well presented. The steep croup detracted from an overall picture of the dog. Moved well – again more muscling in the rear will help with the overall picture.

Open Dog
1   Gr Ch Tullane Tempranillo (Paine)
A dark masculine dog in good show condition. Well balanced, good forechest with balanced front and rear assembly. Lovely head that is long and lean with good planes. His long neck sets well into the shoulders and has well sprung ribs. Moves very effortlessly with great reach and drive. He is a very stand out dog. Well deserved of the Dog Challenge.
2   Ch Brodruggan Temptation (Stewart)
A handsome dog, with very good balance. Also has a nice length of neck that sets well into the shoulders. I prefer the length of rib cage on the 1st dog. In movement he did not cover as much ground as 1st place dog.
3  Aust & NZ Ch Setterlands Tamburello at Pendoric (Hearn/Heskett)
A nice dog, with good front assembly, with good forechest. Moved nicely around the ring. I preferred the overall balance of my 1st and 2nd place dogs.

Veteran Dog (7-10 years)
1 Ch Glengray Wyndchymer (Gray)
A wonderful gray face. Looked like he was enjoying the dog. Pretty head with good planes. Nicely balanced dog with good front and rear assembly. Used his legs well when going around the ring.

Veteran Dog (over 10 years)
1   Ch Daisymont Boston Redsox (Daisymont Kennels)
A wonderful veteran who looks great for his age. Nice long lean head with a good front assembly. Was wonderful to watch going around the ring.

The dog challenge class assembled and it was a lovely lineup. My Challenge Dog was a standout and it went to my Open Dog with my Reserve Dog to my Intermediate Dog.

Dog Challenge : Gr Ch Tullane Tempranillo (Paine)

~~~~~
Baby Puppy Bitch
What a wonderful group of little girls, so mature for their age and lovely to go over.
1   Eireannmada Queen of Rock (Browne)
A wonderful puppy with good bone, lovely headpiece and a soft expression. The length of neck flows smoothly into her shoulders. Nice balanced puppy with correct front and rear assembly and covers the ground well with lots of confidence in the ring.
2   Eireannmada Rock N Robin (Browne)
A lovely head with good planes and expression. Prefer the bone and length of body of the 1st puppy. The neck also fits nicely into the shoulders, as the 1st puppy. Good front and rear assembly and also moves nicely, with confidence in the ring.
3   Eireannmada Rock Me (Browne)
Has begun to come up on leg more than the 1st and 2nd place puppies. As a pretty head and is also nice in length of neck, which fits well into the shoulders. Prefer the depth of stifle on the 1st and 2nd place puppies.
Minor Puppy Bitch
1  Eireannmada Joie De Vivre (Robinson/Browne)
An elegant puppy with good bone, a pretty long lean head with a soft expression and good planes. The neck flows nicely into the shoulders with good depth of chest and a nice long ribcage. Her front and rear assembly are balanced which makes her move effortlessly around the ring covering lots of ground. She gives you the overall picture of balance. Would take her home in a heartbeat. Well deserved of the Challenge Bitch.
2   Eireannmada Fleur De Lis (Browne)
Another beautiful puppy with a nice head with a soft expression and is good neck to shoulder. Good front and rear assembly and moves with coverage of ground. I preferred the proportion within the body of the 1st bitch.
3   Eireannmada Alouetta (Browne/Wheatley)
A nice dark puppy that has began to come up on leg more than the 1st & 2nd puppies. She has pretty head, with good length of neck that fits well into the shoulders. Prefer the length of body of the 1& 2. Carries herself very well around the ring with purpose.
Puppy Bitch
1   Eireannmada Amelia Earhart (Browne)
Nice puppy with a lovely head and good topline. She has a lovely front assembly, with good forechest. The depth of stifle takes away overall picture of balance.
Junior Bitch
1   Cairncross Flirting with Tullane (Paine)
Pretty bitch that has a good front assembly and forechest. Has a pretty head, with a nice expression, and a long neck that fits well into her shoulders. Good depth of chest with elbows well under her. Her body proportions brought her rear too far under her in the move, which did not let her have the free and easy stride I would prefer.
2   Nauvoo at Sienna (Scott/Atkinson)
Nice bitch, good bone, with a long neck that fits well into the shoulders. I prefer the overall picture of the 1st bitch.
3   Ornac R U Talkn to Me (Underwood)
Nice bitch with a lovely head that enjoyed her day in the ring.
Intermediate Bitch
1   Ch Brodruggan Dancing Doll (Sullivan)
A lovely bitch with good type. Has a nice front assembly and rib spring. The neck fits nicely into the shoulders and moves nicely, covering ground well around the ring.
2   Ch Rhiannon Irish Treasure (Scott)
A nice bitch with a good head and pretty expression. When moving she covers ground well. Prefer the front assembly and rib spring of the 1st bitch.
3   Ch Ornac Behold N It Now (Underwood)
A different style bitch with a nice head and expression. Preferred the proportions within the body of the 1st & 2nd bitch.
Australian Bred Bitch
1   Ch Eireannmada Song O Praise (Browne)
A balanced lovely bitch with good substance. Has a lovely head with a soft expression. Has a significant forechest and front assembly & moves nicely on her legs covering the ground well.
2  Ch Pendoric Perfect Angel (Hearn/Baker)
A nice bitch, more up on leg than the 1st place bitch. Has a nice topline and tail set. Prefer the upper arm length of the 1st bitch. Moved nicely.
3   Ch Brodruggan Iridescence (Bird)
Taken by her head – nice expression with good planes. Preferred the proportions within the body of the 1st and 2nd place bitches.
Open Bitch
1   Ch Rhiannon Resplendence (Scott)
An elegant bitch, with a pretty head with good planes. Would like to see a more almond shaped eye which is critical in the expression of the irish setter. Has a good front assembly with good depth of chest and rib spring. Neck fits nicely into the shoulders. Nice topline and tail set, with good rear assembly. She moves well around the ring covering ground well.
2  Ch Tahtan Forbiden Fruit (Finlaison)
A pretty bitch with nice long neck that fits nicely into the shoulders. Good front and rear assembly. Prefer the head and length of body of the 1st bitch. She moves nicely around the ring covering ground well.
3   Ch Pendoric Fire Anythyme (Hearn)
Nice bitch with a pretty head and eye. Has a good front assembly with good shoulder layback. Good rear assembly and moves well around the ring. Prefer the proportions within the body of the 1st and 2nd bitch.
Veteran Bitch (7-10 years)
1  Ch Eireannmada Marie Claire (Browne)
This wonderful old face melted my heart, has a beautiful head and good planes with a soft expression. She has a wonderful front and rear assembly. Is smooth neck to shoulder and still moves well around the ring.
2   Ch Ornac Oops Forda Gossips ET (Underwood)
Has a pretty head with a lovely old expression. Nice front assembly. Preferred the overall balance of the 1st bitch.
The Challenge class came in and it was lovely lineup and I was pleased with my picks.
On the go around my eye went to the Open Bitch and the Minor Puppy. My decision for the Challenge Bitch came down to first type and second soundness in movement.
I picked the Minor Puppy because of her beautiful type, ground covering movement, strong topline and soundness on her down and back and Reserve Challenge Bitch went to my Open Bitch.
Critiques
The following are various critiques by officiating judges at past Irish Setter Club of Victoria’s Championship Shows.   I believe they are of interest as the judges’ comments are of many of the dogs of today’s ancestors.
IRISH SETTER CLUB OF VICTORIA
39th CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW – November 5th 2000
Judge: Mrs Celeste Gavin (USA) (Gabhantyr)
My overall opinion – Since you have a smaller gene pool to work with than we do in America, it is hard to believe your dogs are as wonderful as I found them to be.
From baby puppy dog to veterans there wasn’t a class that disappointed me. Your dogs are probably overall the best group of Irish I have ever judged.
Again thank you for the privilege of putting my hands on your glorious Irish. It was a day that will always hold a special place in my heart.
I must also mention to all of you that belong to the Irish that I judged, I loved meeting every one of you. If any of you visit Florida please come to my home.
Celeste Gavin
~~~~~~~~
Baby Puppy dog
What a pleasure to begin my judging with two such nice Irish puppies.
1st – Eireannmada Prince Harry
Very stylish puppy on the move, and pleasant to go over.
2nd – Kiltimagh Celtic Mist
Balanced puppy, I really liked this one as well but the first asked for the win.

Minor Puppy dog
1st – Ornac Redhot Redemption
He had a lovely topline and was the best mover of the two.
Very nice front to rear.
2nd – Corrimeala Winters Tale
More forechest than one but he did not behave as
well as my first placed puppy. It was difficult to
evaluate his movement.
First place was more my type.

Puppy dog
1st – Ornac Redhot Raymaker
More my style better length of body and tail set.
2nd – Corrimeala Trumpet Major
I would like a better shoulder angle and tail set.

Junior Dog
1st – Eireannmada House O Kent
A really lovely dog, very balanced. My favourite the minute I saw him and he did not let me down on the move.
2nd – Taraglen Renaissance
Very nice dog, less of him than the first.
3rd – Eirean Pembath
I liked this dog in the body but he was badly behaved on the stack, which made it difficult to evaluate him. Slightly broader in skull than I like.

Intermediate Dog
1st – Saxony’s Evening Tide (imp USA)
Very sound and stylish on the move, nice tail set and let down of rear. A little straighter in front and shorter bodied than I like.
2nd Daisymont Boston Red Sox
I really loved the body on this dog. It was a hard decision but this dog had a wider skull than pleases me.
3rd – Ch Eireannmada Prince O Wales
Very pretty on the stack, not quite as good in front movement as other two, and just a bit heavier over the top of the shoulder.

Australian Bred Dog
1st – Ch Gwyndara Total Eclipse (AI)
Beautiful type, very much my kind of dog. His head was lovely. He stole my heart from the minute I laid eyes on him and knew if he could move he would win the class, and he moved wonderfully.
2nd – Ch Kiltimagh Mahogany Morn
Very good type more side reach than one.
3rd – Ch Eireannmada America’s Cup
I loved the side movement on this dog, as he really covered the ground. But he was not as good up and back as the other two.

Open Dog
1st – Ch Tullane Fiery Thyme
In profile from nose to tip of his tail a glorious picture. Smoothly balanced. Wonderfully long muzzled, I love this dog standing. I would like just a bit of the Irish pizzazz on the move, although he covered the ground very efficiently.
2nd – Ch Gwyndara Montpelier (AI)
Exciting type overall, similar to the Australian bred, more fire on the move than my winner.
3rd – Ch Irishmoor Ketari (AI)
Nicely balanced, good upper arm. Lovely dog.

Veteran Dog
I love the veterans and neither one of these veterans let me down, both wonderful dogs.

1st – Ch Pendoric Pandemonium (AI)
I found the head and arch of neck on my first place more pleasing and very balanced in the body.
2nd – Ch Eireannmada at Harvard
I liked this dog’s movement especially his side movement, He really covered the ground.

Dog Challenge: Ch. Tullane Fiery Thyme
My open dog had already won my heart and was an easy choice as I had loved him standing and he moved with more of the Irish spirit than in the beginning.
Reserve Challenge: Eireannmada House O Kent
My Australian bred and second in open were much alike in type, although I liked the Aust bred better. My junior dog though young was handsome and he fit in type with the winner. This choice was very difficult and on another day could have gone the other way.

~~~~~
Baby Puppy Bitch
Both lovely puppies.  Both of these, just like my baby dogs were great puppies and so well trained.
1st – Kiltimagh Rains Reprint
My first place puppy had great shoulder and upper arm angulation. A wonderful head.
2nd – Pendoric Pretty Special
Nice neck into shoulders.
Minor Puppy Bitch
1st – Ornac Redhot Reason
Overall best bodied, nice neck into shoulder, moved and carried herself very well for her age.
2nd – Ornac Redhot Rhyme
I liked her head best of the three.
3rd – Corrimeala Vanity Fair
She was squarer overall, not quite long enough for me.
Puppy Bitch
1st – Gwyndara La Vida Loca
Beautifully put together, not well behaved and loose mover.
2nd – Corrimeala Country Girl
This was better behaved, but slightly squarer than I like
Junior bitch
A lovely class
1st – Tullane Whytwokay Okay
This bitch caught my eye immediately, a wonderful smooth body from the back of her skull to the tip of her tail. Elegant both standing and moving. I loved her head.
2nd – Nauvoo Too Fat To Skate
I almost cried when I saw this bitch, I had to look away. She had the look of the old second generation Meadowlarks from the seventies. Sound well balanced, but different in type to 1or 3.
3rd – Tullane Ateicol Dotcom
Looked very much like my first placed bitch, but a little heavier headed and rangier in the body than one.
Intermediate bitch
1st – Brechins Dare to Dream
Nice bitch, overall smooth and well balanced in front and rear.
2nd – Ardglen Don’t Dilly Dally
Similar to one good type and also well balanced.
3rd – Rhiannon Devorgilla
More compact than one or two with a good outline.
Australian Bred bitch
A hard class to judge.
1st – Ch Brechins Bliss
A pretty head with good side movement.
2nd – Ch Gwyndara Hearts on Fire (AI)
Better in shoulder than one but with a slightly stronger head.
3rd – Eireannmada Southern Belle
Again a pretty, overall balanced bitch.
Open bitch
1st – Ch Brechins Remember Me
Lovely body with good length of neck into shoulder.
2nd – Ch Tullane Thesis By Design
A better head than one but I liked one overall the best, nevertheless a wonderful bitch.
3rd – Ch Gwyndara You wear it well (AI)
A pretty outline on this bitch.
Veteran bitch
I almost cried all the way through this class, those grey faces tug at my heart.
1st – GR Ch Pendoric Fire N Ice (AI)
Just a wonderful type, head and arch of neck blew me away. She flew across the ring never once showing her age.
2nd – Ch Rosslare From a Distance (AI)
Great head super bitch a little shorter coupled than one.
3rd – Gr Ch Irishacre Summer Sheelin
Boy could she go, never showing her age, but she did not give me her best on the stack, still I would be proud to own her.
Bitch Challenge : Grand Ch. Pendoric Fire’ N’ Ice-
This was probably the hardest for me to judge. My veteran bitch was just super both standing and moving. Her arch of neck is probably the final thing that made me choose her, and, of course her maturity.
Reserve Challenge : Tullane Whytwokay Okay
I was crazy about the outline of this bitch, a wonderful flashy bitch with a beautiful feminine head. She was very close to beating the veteran bitch for the points. I would love to see her in a year from now.
I must also mention the minor puppy bitch as I seriously considered her too. She was dark in colour had a beautiful carriage and was very sound. She is another I would like to see upon maturing.
Best of breed
Almost impossible to judge. I would have been happier if I could have given it to both. Since this was not possible, the fabulous outline of the dog won out.
BEST EXHIBIT IN SHOW:  Ch. Tullane Fiery Thyme
RUNNER-UP IN SHOW:  Gr Ch Pendoric Fire’N’Ice
THE IRISH SETTER CLUB OF VICTORIA
38TH CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW – 31 OCTOBER 1999
MRS EDYTH LANGHAM-GOODWIN* (Shelomith)
To be invited to judge one’s own breed at a Specialty Show I consider a great honour and this was, indeed, the case on 31 October 1999 when I judged Specials at the Irish Setter Club of Victoria’s 38th Championship Show.
The path to this judging appointment commenced over sixty (60) years ago when my parents selected a show quality Irish Setter puppy. All my life I have been accompanied by a parade of Irish setters.
This year our showday was not perfect for showing Irish but I was impressed by the beautiful exhibits and their presentation – the breed glows with style.
(* Mrs Langham Goodwin judged General Specials at this show)
Best Baby Puppy in Show (Tullane Ateicol Dotcom)
Such presence for a baby. Very stylish, racy, moved with confidence. A pretty picture.
Opposite Sex Baby Puppy (Eireannmada ?)
Very much a baby. Lovely colour, nice head but really too early to evaluate. Too small and not used to leading to see movement.
Best Minor Puppy (Taraglen Poldark)
Outstanding puppy. Shows great promise. Loved his attitude, nice balance, neck, head and movement.
Opposite Sex Minor Puppy (Rhiannon Devorgilla)
Still very immature – dog puppy outshone this little bitch at this stage. Pleasant type.
Best Puppy in Show (Martinridge Victorywaltz)
Opposite sex Puppy in Show (Martinridge Vintage Crop)
These two puppies were very close overall nice specimens. Well balanced, good heads, moved well for their age. The bitch on the day had more elegance and style for me. I learned later they were brother & sister. I’m sure the dog will develop well.
Junior Dog (Saxonys Evening Tide (Imp USA)
Very exciting and interesting junior – great presence; should mature into a very eyecatching dog. Lacks maturity, coat and weight – all of which will come.
Opposite Sex Junior in Show (Daisymont Utah Jazz)
I liked this bitch – very feminine. Also should mature into a lovely specimen. This class was very close. Overall the bitch may have better qualities but lacked the eyecatching spirit of the dog. She was overshadowed in the final count.
Best Intermediate in Show (Ch Tullane Thesis By Design)
Such an exquisite and elegant bitch – lovely outline, very feminine, a pity she was out of coat – however this only brought out her stylish body.
Opposite Intermediate in Show (Eireannmada Princeowales)
Very nice dog. He lacked a little maturity – still a little gangly. Overall an interesting specimen. I feel, particularly for Irish dogs, 18 months is often the hardest time. They are neither puppy or mature dog and so much is expected from them. This boy will be an even more pleasing specimen in six months time.
Australian Bred In Show (Ch Eireannmada Times Square)
A worthy winner of this award. A beautiful dog, balanced and presented in perfect bloom – a joy in the ring even in blustery conditions – steady and easy to watch.
Opposite Aust Bred (Eireannmada Repartee)
Pleasing bitch, balanced and again overshadowed by the dog.
Best Open in Show (Ch Tullane Fiery Thyme)
An eyecatching animal presented to perfection.
Opposite Open in Show (Ch Quailmoor Capucci)
I didn’t judge – BIS was Open and was “automatic”, however, she was a lovely typey bitch, beautifully presented.
Best Veteran in Show (Gr Ch Brodruggan Far and Away CD)
This exhibit moved around the ring superbly, certainly not as one is used to seeing veterans move. A well balanced, not exaggerated dog in excellent condition.
Opposite Veteran in Show (Ch Marigold Maximum Delight)
What a veteran – a beautiful specimen. Gave away a little to the dog in movement and overall bloom – a faded beauty, almost too beautiful not to win.
These veterans play a most important part in a Specialty Show.
A reminder for we breeders and judges not to get carried away with latest fads but look carefully at the greats of yesterday and remember the Irish were bred to work all day in Irish conditions. I acknowledge the dogs of yesteryear perhaps would not have won at today’s shows and the current Irish has developed into a spectacular and glorious creature, but the standard still requests a beautiful head, soft expression, good movement and sound animal.
Best Exhibit in Show – Ch Tullane Fiery Thyme
This dog filled the eye – a picture of beauty standing. I’m sure he fulfils most expectations of an Irish Setter. Shown in full bloom, handled superbly. I was delighted with the best exhibit.
Runner Up & Opposite Sex in Show – Ch Tullane Thesis By Design
They complimented each other – very hard for an out of coat bitch to win over a mature dog in perfect bloom, no matter how sweet the bitch. This told in the final evaluation. She is still a very pretty bitch and it was not a walkover – she gave him a run for his money!
Thank you for giving me the honour of judging Specials at this Show – a memory I shall always treasure.
THE IRISH SETTER CLUB OF VICTORIA
46TH CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 2007
MRS RITA PIKE (Scarletti Irish Setters)
Firstly I would like to thank the Society for inviting me to judge this special show.
It was my first visit to Australia and although not quite welcomed by the legendary Australian sunshine it did prove to be a memorable visit.
The Irish Setter is markedly different to the type shown in the UK notably the difference in head type; some were really plain and hound like. The size and shape differ immensely and I found most too large and exaggerated. Coat colour is much lighter than in the UK although the feathering is profuse and I congratulate the exhibitors on the excellent presentation of their charges.
One thing that bothered me was the gripping of the root of the tail and thrusting the dog forwards, apart from being most uncomfortable to the dog it does nothing for the front angulation of the exhibit especially if it already fails in that area.
Another pointer I noticed was weakness in pasterns causing the exhibits to pin in and appear flat footed. No bad temperaments on the day they were a delight to handle.
BABY PUPPY DOG
1ST MARTINRIDGE WORK O ART (Martin)
Stood alone in this class. Four months old baby. Has promising topline and croup and well bent stifles, his head need to break. He moved OK.
PUPPY DOG
1st PENDORIC RED N RAGIN (Fry)
A striking puppy with a nice head, would like a little more stop but he is just a baby, good front and depth, a little long cast, he has well bent stifles and lovely dark coat very well grown he showed and moved well.
2nd GWYNDARA ONE MAN SHOW (A1) (Jones)
Larger type than 1st so not quite there in his movement yet, needs to tighten in front and strengthen in pasterns, movement unsteady. I am sure he will grow into himself. Looks well in profile.
3rd AMHURST YNOT WAYBACK WHEN (Howd)
A little unsettled today in the cold surroundings, I liked his head difficult to assess his qualities.
JUNIOR DOG
1ST EIREAN FROZEN MAGIC (Whittington)
Nice dark coated well feathered youngster, quite short coupled. I would like more shoulder angulation. Good feet and short hocks he made use of the big ring.
INTERMEDIATE DOG
1ST Aust/NZ Ch SETTERLANDS TAMBURELLO AT PENDORIC (Imp NZ) (Hearn) What a glamour boy – handsome, stylish, well balanced, striking dog with shoulder angulation. He showed a clean pair of heels when moving around the ring. Beautifully presented with a super handler. Reserve CC.
2nd MARTINRIDGE ACAPULCO (Martin)
Liked this dog too nice head and eye he has nice depth and well ribbed, looked a picture standing but not quite as positive as the winner.
3rd CH LINLEYMVOURNE NOTTINGHAM (Lovell)
Liked his head, dark coated dog shorter coupled that 1st and 2nd. Looked a bit unbalanced on the back end, he moved well his handler certainly worked hard to get this place. Good rapport between dog and handler.
AUSTRALIAN BRED DOG
1st EIREANNMADA RIVERDANCE (Fall & Browne)
Liked this dog, well presented good looking boy. Thought him quite handsome and balanced (when not overstretched). Would have liked a cleaner croup. He was one of the more positive movers today with good tail carriage.
2nd DUNLOE HOT FUDGE (Middleton)
Nice type of dog but moving a little loose in front today and pinning in. Also lifted his tail on the move. Liked his head and he was in gleaming condition.
3rd GRD CH BRODRUGGAN THE DUBLINER (Lovell)
Different type to 1st and 2nd. He has a nice head and eye, strong neck into reasonable front assembly. Unfortunately he was not in such good coat but what he was wearing was dark and gleaming. Very good mover.
OPEN DOG
1st CH BRODRUGGAN TEMPTATION (Stewart)
A really lovely dog. Well balanced and not overdone he has a lovely head, good neck and well laid shoulders, super front and feet, well ribbed back, good depth with plenty of heart room, super dog standing and moving, well handled and so beautifully presented, well deserved the Dog CC.
2nd CH SHELOMITH VICE REGENT (Cleland/Browne/Langham-Goodwin)
Very elegant dog, failed to one in shoulder, but I liked the rest of him a lot. A great showman and so well handled, moved and showed well and has a lot going for him.
3rd CH EIREANNMADA FLYING SOLO (Craig/Browne)
Not so striking in topline a little heavier than 1st and 2nd. Nice head and eye, neat feet, short hocks and well handled and moved well.
VETERAN DOG (7-10 YEARS)
1st EIREANNMADA HOUSE OF SAX (Smith)
Eight years old dog in great condition. Upstanding with nice head and eye, good front and feet, in super coat, he moved well with drive and really enjoyed his day out.
VETERAN DOG (OVER 10 YEARS)
1st Gr CH GWYNDARA TOTAL ECLIPSE (Jones)
Almost eleven years this dog has a great name and is in great condition. He still maintains a high level of fitness which showed in his movement. A quality dog his owner must be proud of him
2nd BAIYAI FEVER PITCH (AI) (Gration)
Another golden oldie! He obviously loves his dinner, what a lovely old man. Such a sweet head, he moved well for his 10 and a half years. In great shape. His owner must cherish him.
BABY PUPPY BITCH
1st ORNAC R U TALKN TO ME (Underwood)
I just loved this delightful baby pup, naughty but nice. Dark coated, pretty head most promising must have a good future. Best Baby Puppy.
2nd MARTINRIDGE FINE ART (Martin)
Another nice baby, more extreme in topline, pretty head, good front and feet.
3rd MARTINRIDGE FANTASY ART (Martin)
Litter sister to 2nd. Pretty puppy not so good in neck and shoulder at this young age, she moved well.
PUPPY BITCH
1st MARTINRIDGE GRACE (Martin)
Very forward 11 months girl. She has a good head neck and shoulders, good depth well ribbed back nice overall balance and super coat. She moved well.
2nd AMHURST DO YOU REMEMBER (Thomas)
No so forward youngster, I preferred her head to 1st. A little loose in front at this age and maybe a shorter hock would be desired. I liked her overall balance and colour.
JUNIOR BITCH
1st EIREANNMADA CALL O THE WIND (A1) (Browne)
Just 12 months she is an elegant pretty bitch. Well laid shoulders, good depth plenty of heart room, well tucked loin, not exaggerated in hindquarters and neat firm short hocks. She moved with drive and confidence around the ring.
INTERMEDIATE BITCH
1st CH PENDORIC PERFECT ANGEL (Hearn/Baker)
Lovely type, pretty feminine head and good front assembly, neat feet. Well balanced so presents an eye catching topline, dark coated strong quarters and she moved well.
2nd CH TAHTAN FORBIDDEN FRUIT (Finlaison)
Nice bitch with lots to like about her. Elegant and feminine, rather a long neck which makes her look unbalanced, nice topline and croup finish and strong quarters so moved well.
3rd GWYNDARA SERENDIPITY (A1) (Jones)
Nice type of bitch. A good topline – held when moving, well angulated front and back she owns a sweet head.
AUSTRALIAN BRED BITCH
1st BRECHINS OVER THE RAINBOW (McFarlane)
Bitch with a nice head, striking in topline (although for me sometimes a little overstretched) short neat hocks, in super coat and well presented, she moved well.
2nd MARTINRIDGE GOT SPIRIT (Martin)
Close up to 1st just not quite the finish, preferred head and expression of 1st. Good mover.
3rd CH PENDORIC PURE MAYHEM (Wheatley)
Elegant girl with good front and feet. Larger type that 1st and 2nd, very pleasing overall in body shape in good coat and she moved well.
OPEN BITCH
1st CH PENDORIC FIRE ANYTHYME (Hearn)
Quality bitch. Made an instant impact with her pretty head and eye, super ear set nice front and rear assembly together with good depth and spring in rib. Standing she looked a picture and did not let herself down on the move, holding her classic topline. So well presented and handled. She was my star of the day. CC & BIS.
2nd CH DUNLOE ORIGINAL SIN (Middleton)
Different type to one but also very nice. Longer cast so failed in topline. She has a pretty head and expression, good angulation front and rear, in beautiful coat, well presented and handled.
3rd CH SOLASDAS UNFORGETABLE (Fuller)
Liked her pretty head, front and rear angles. Neat front & feet, plenty of heart room, pleasing topline plenty of coat and a good sound mover.
VETERAN (7-10 YEARS)
1st CH RHIANNON DEVORGILLA (Scott)
Super 8 years old bitch who commanded attention, in tip top condition. Good head and expression good front and feet and strong rear end, in extremely good coat she looked great and did not disappoint on the move. A credit to her breeder/owner. Reserve CC.
Belies her years, lovely type still has all the essential qualities to enable her to compete at any level.
3rd CH BRODRUGGAN DRESDIN DOLL (Stewart)
Pretty bitch dark coated nice make and shape, no exaggerations she too was in great condition, good mover.
